While it is common knowledge that corruption is a widespread problem in Hungary, the role of EU funds and the extent to which these funds are affected by corrupt practices often goes unnoticed. EU money from cohesion funds is frequently misappropriated, and the money as well as public contracts often given to government allies as well as friends and family of prime minister Orbán. One of the most prominent examples is Orbán's long-time friend and ally, Lőrinc Mészáros, whose wealth has tried over the years, thanks to the Fidesz government. The EU needs to find new solutions to exert control over the projects financed by EU money, and ensure that the money has not been misappropriated and further enriched corrupt government officials and cronies.
Amidst a raging pandemic, the Polish government published the decision by the Constitutional Tribunal in October 2020, which makes abortions in the instance of severe and irreversible impairment of the fetus illegal. Unsurprisingly people are on the streets, protest, rebel or decide to organise bottom-up dispersed forms of activism. However, the existence of these movements in themselves is not enough to create a strong counter system for the ruling, right-wing party PiS and thus the question: where is the opposition?
