In the past few years, Europe has witnessed an upsurge of populist trends through several far-right and far-left parties sweeping around the continent. Sometimes with milder, sometimes with harsher manifestos, countries like Hungary, Greece, France, and Italy have been frequently in the spotlight. Currently, attention has been drawn to Italy and Sweden due to the September elections.
The politicization of intelligence products is a recurring issue that can have extreme effects on how foreign policy is conducted, how military operations and orders of battle are planned, and how intelligence is presented to policymakers. This politicization can clearly have an effect on intelligence and how it is presented to policymakers and the public. One of the most contested and interesting examples of the politicization of intelligence was in the lead-up to the 2003 Iraq War.
Often, laws can be vague or ambiguous, and judges need to support their decisions with resplendent reasoning, which finds its roots in the pursuit of justice. What is crucial, however, is that judges adhere to the reasonable boundaries set by the concrete legal framework when unleashing their legal creativity. It is far from unusual to be at a loss as to where these boundaries end. From a constitutional law viewpoint, one can argue whether judges have crossed reasonable boundaries both in the Dobbs v Jackson and the Roe v Wade cases.
Uniting all post-colonies as a global post-colony is a notion that diminishes the historical, historiographical and cultural differences present in each post-colony around the world. Therefore, unifying colonial legacies and treating them as a homogenised unit disregards their experiences, which damages their diverse yet relative historical progress. Instead, one should aim for an alternative perception of understanding a global post-colony, as the idea is not completely unworkable but provides a strong epistemological foundation to combat Western hegemonic discourses.
Climate change, one of the most defining issues of the 21st century with devastating ramifications, could potentially result in the cessation of humanity and millions of other biotic species. According to environmental scientists, urgent action must be taken to alleviate the causes aggravating the climate crisis by 2030. And yet, governments, corporations and the general population have been slow to act. The truth is, climate change is a problem of today, and we must act today. Sustaining our survival on this planet is a collective issue.
In the past few years, Middle Eastern governments have deepened their ties with the Kremlin. Vladimir Putin and his regime were equally enthusiastic about intervening in Middle Eastern politics and propping up the region’s autocracies to restore Russia’s status as a global superpower. Today, both sides collaborate on various political and security issues affecting the Middle East. This relationship now influences how various Middle Eastern governments respond to the ongoing war in Ukraine. The response has been mostly ambivalent, as most of the region’s governments see Russia as a valuable ally that they cannot afford to alienate.
History features some of humanity’s perennial sufferings and achievements. They inform us of various events such as the space race, which took humans to the moon and beyond, and two Great Wars causing millions of deaths and endless destruction. What is often excluded is the history experienced by millions beyond Europe and the Americas, the history of a region referred to as the Global South.
On August 1st, Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orbán travelled to the United States to speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in Dallas, Texas. Despite the recent outrage due to his racist remarks during a speech in Romania just the week before, Orbán’s invitation to speak at the conservative conference was not cancelled. Before the start of CPAC, Orbán even met Trump, who called him his “friend” and acknowledged Orbán’s expertise in world affairs. But where does this admiration for Orbán, the leader of a small eastern European country, come from?
In the past year, since the January 6th attacks on the U.S. Capitol, white supremacy and right-wing extremist militant groups have been experiencing a rise in recruitment and have been undergoing many changes, largely due to the changing social and political structures within the United States. Renewed discussion about fandoms and white nationalist/right-wing movements has been occurring in the media since the January 2021 storming of the Capitol building. Partially classifying the white supremacist movement as a fandom can have benefits in the study of these organizations and the individual relationships of domestic terrorists to one another.
The Muslim Golden Age is a historiographical creation like many other conceptions that influence our view of Medieval history. Muslim culture and civilisation flourished throughout an age of exception stability and wealth until at least the early thirteenth century (Kafadar, 2010). The Golden Age highlights the greatest achievements accomplished by the Muslim world between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, with the Ottomans and Mughals, who are normally disregarded, being included as part of this time period.
